Deck Renovation Project: Transforming an Existing Deck Into a Finished Outdoor Living Space.
An existing deck can have plenty of life left in it without needing to be completely torn down and rebuilt.
For this recent State Construction project, our team renovated and upgraded an existing elevated deck to create a cleaner, more finished outdoor living space. The goal was to improve the appearance of the deck, protect and finish exposed areas, and make the covered patio underneath feel like a true extension of the home.
The completed project combines the existing elevated deck with black railings, finished fascia, wrapped support columns, a clean ceiling underneath the deck, and direct access to the backyard.
Here is a step-by-step look at how we completed the renovation.
Step 1: Inspecting the Existing Deck
Before beginning any deck renovation, we evaluate the existing structure and determine what can remain and what needs to be repaired, replaced, or upgraded.
The original deck already provided a large elevated outdoor space, but underneath the deck the structural framing, joists, beams, and wood support posts remained exposed.
Rather than unnecessarily replacing the entire structure, the project focused on improving and finishing the existing deck while addressing areas that needed attention.

Step 2: Preparing the Existing Structure
Once the existing deck was evaluated, we prepared the structure for the renovation.

Step 3: Finishing the Deck Perimeter and Fascia
One of the most noticeable improvements was the finished exterior edge of the deck.
The exposed perimeter was upgraded with dark fascia that complements the home's black windows, railings, and exterior details.
Deck fascia may seem like a small detail, but it can dramatically change the appearance of an elevated deck. Instead of seeing exposed framing from the backyard, homeowners see a clean, continuous finished surface.
The dark finish also creates a strong contrast against the white exterior of the home.
Step 4: Completing the Railings and Stair System
The existing elevated design required a secure railing system around the deck as well as safe access to the backyard.
Black railings give the project a modern appearance while also complementing the architectural style of the home.
The railing continues along the exterior staircase, creating a consistent look from the upper deck all the way down to the patio and yard.
When renovating a deck, stairs and railings are important both visually and functionally. They need to integrate properly with the structure while providing comfortable and secure access between different outdoor areas.
Step 5: Enclosing the Exposed Area Under the Deck
One of the biggest transformations happened underneath the elevated deck.
Originally, the wood joists and structural framing were completely exposed. While this is common with elevated decks, it can leave the lower patio feeling unfinished.
We installed a clean finished ceiling underneath the deck structure.
The new ceiling conceals the exposed framing and creates a much more polished covered patio area.
Instead of feeling like space underneath a deck, the lower level now feels like its own outdoor room.
Step 6: Wrapping the Support Columns
The original structural support posts were exposed treated lumber.
As part of the renovation, the posts were wrapped and finished in white to coordinate with the home's siding and trim.
This made a significant difference in the final appearance.
The posts still perform their structural purpose, but visually they now look like finished architectural columns instead of exposed deck supports.
Small finishing details like these help a renovated deck look intentional and integrated with the original home.
Step 7: Creating a Finished Covered Patio
Because this is an elevated deck, the homeowners essentially have two outdoor spaces.
The upper level provides an open deck for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the backyard.
Underneath, the existing concrete patio is now protected by the deck above and surrounded by professionally finished surfaces.
With the ceiling completed and columns wrapped, this area can be used for outdoor furniture, entertaining, relaxing in the shade, or simply enjoying additional covered outdoor space.
It is a great example of how an elevated deck can provide significantly more functionality than just the deck surface itself.
Step 8: Final Detailing and Cleanup
The final stage involved reviewing all of the finishing work and making sure the different components came together properly.
From the fascia and railings to the ceiling and wrapped columns, the goal was to create a consistent appearance that looked like it belonged with the home.
After completing the detail work and cleaning the project area, the homeowners were left with a completely refreshed outdoor space.
